In the Canyons

We just returned from a nine-day trip to Canyonlands National Park in Utah. We had some great adventures and I collected some inspiring images for future paintings. Our travel adventure is also why this edition of the newsletter is a bit late and without an animation. I have included some Canyonlands studies I painted since our return.

“Dead Horse Point at Dawn”  (photo)

Our neighbor in the campground suggested we pitch our tents close to a tree, tie ropes around our ankles and tie the other ends to the tree to keep from blowing away. He was only half joking.

After a windy night of flapping tents and clouds of dust blasting into our faces as we tried to sleep, we launch out of our gritty bags before dawn, pile into the Jeep, and race to Dead Horse Point, about a mile away. We find our places along the rim, ready to take our photos. As the sun rises, my jaw drops. I almost forget to take the pictures. Sunrise lasts about three minutes until the sun disappears into the clouds. It’s worth all the suffering.

Standing on the high, slickrock rim, gazing into the wonderland of rock stretching into the hazy distance, I feel like a beginning painter facing his first model. I am completely overwhelmed. “There’s no way I can do justice to this.” Of course, that’s what makes it worth doing.

I’ve been working on a large three-panel painting for the past several weeks. And it’s still not finished! Sometimes, it takes a while to get it just right. I’m on the right track now, and will finish it soon.  I’ve also done a few studies from the Canyonlands trip.

Journal

Read the adventures (and non-adventures) of an artist. What’s the story behind the paintings? Every event is shockingly true. Read the Journal if you dare. New entry: “In the Canyons.”
